Before recognition of the iris can take place, an algorithm which helps reduce the noise and extract features of the iris needs to be applied. One effective and commonly used algorithm for such purposes is called the Circular Hough Transform (CHT) method. Circular Hough Transform works in two steps. The first is the segmentation step, which divides and separates the eye image into different parts with the iris being the main segment. The second step is normalization or localization, which reduces noise and extracts the main features from different parts of the eye.

The data extracted from the eye, especially the iris, is usually represented in a series of binary bits. That means the iris authentication system verifies the identity of a person by attempting to compare the binary values of an iris image with the binary values of the iris template. For the comparison of the image and template, Hamming Distance (HD) algorithm is applied as a test of statistical difference between the two values. Therefore, the iris authentication is essentially the attempt to determine the proportion of binary bits of the captured iris image that match the binary bits of the iris template.
